Features of beds with a soft headboard, what to look for

If you are a fan of a comfortable interior, you should pay attention to the bed with a soft headboard, which is suitable for those who like to spend time in bed - read, work, have breakfast. At the same time, the headboard can be small, proportionate to the bed and low, or represent a separate decor element that is not part of the bed body. Designers often use a similar solution to make alcoves more comfortable by placing a tall and large headboard directly on the wall. Upholstery can be made of fabrics of the same tone with a bedspread, which is considered a classic of the solution, or can be a separate bright accent that will become the main part of the interior.

Functional Features

It may seem that a bed with a soft headboard is uncomfortable and unnecessarily massive for a modern interior. This is not so: modern models are ergonomic and functional, they include:

  • boxes for storing linen;
  • lifting gears;
  • removable covers to simplify furniture care.

A high headboard with upholstery is an excellent way to increase sound insulation, which is very important in modern houses with thin walls. The backrest with fabric upholstery will prevent the propagation of sound waves.

The soft headboard is very comfortable, allows you to comfortably sit in bed. Variants of shape can be very different - from strict and graphic, to curly, soft. There are headboards with shelves, they are convenient to use when there is not enough room for a bedside table in the room, and there is a need to keep some important things handy - glasses, a book, a smartphone.

Headboard Options

If you decide to purchase a bed with a soft headboard, then it is worth exploring a wide selection of models, each of which will have its own advantages.

With some design decisions, you can find a bed with a curved headboard. In this case, it can act as a separate element of the interior, enclosing the bed from a window or wall. Such headboards can significantly exceed the width of the bed, separating not only the bed, but also the bedside tables. The task of such a large-scale interior element is to combine all the items of a berth in a single ensemble.

Another option that lovers of a comfortable stay will certainly appreciate is beds with an adjustable headboard. They are comfortable, soft, beautiful, are part of the body of the product and can take a different slope, which allows you to occupy the most convenient position. There are models with mechanics and electric drive. The back becomes vertical, can be fixed in the position of "reclining" and horizontal. A very convenient option if you are used to watching TV in bed or reading.

Upholstery

When choosing a model with a headboard covered in leather or fabric, it should be understood that it should fit into the interior and support the overall concept. Ideally, the headboard fabric is supported by other textiles in the room - curtains, sofa cushions, rugs or bedspreads. Upholstery can be done directly on the shield or can be a cover on the head of the bed, which can be removed and sent for cleaning - this option is mainly used for fabric headboards made of cotton, velor or chenille. Dust settles on the fabric and simply wiping it will not be enough.

Upholstery can be done with the following types of fabric:

  • the most convenient and preferred option is the skin - it is durable, strong, beautiful, breathes, it is easy to care for. This option is suitable for the classic and modern interior;
  • luxurious baroque headboards are decorated with silk, tapestry, framed by curly gilded frames. Such headboards set the tone for the entire interior and require support by other decorative elements. A more rigorous, but no less expensive, Empire style is also characterized by an expensive finish - silk and velvet in a combination of red, blue and white with gold;
  • more democratic headboard in close-fitting velor. It is pleasant to the touch, modern fabrics repel dust and do not burn out. Dry cleaning will allow the furniture to remain presentable for a long time;
  • Stitching and screeds are often used as decor. On the skin and tissues you can see the capiton, which is also called the "carriage screed". The pattern is created by firmware using tight buttons to match the tone of the main material. The result is volumetric squares or rhombuses. It looks impressive, the capitone is always popular among those who want to get a soft headboard. Apply this pattern on fabric and skin.

When choosing upholstery, you need to focus not only on the price, but also on the ability to care for furniture. If regular cleaning is a burden to you or there are children, animals in the house, then it is better to prefer a simpler option with a cover that can be washed or replaced. For leather heads, you need to follow the care algorithm, which implies the absence of direct sunlight, removal from batteries and no sharp objects. The skin is more comfortable than eco-leather - in the event of a tear or cut, the first is easier to repair so that no traces are visible.

Filler

A soft headboard implies the presence of a filler. Previously, in the manufacture of such structures, which can be found in old products from solid oak, foam rubber, batting were used. Today, the choice of fillers is much wider, it depends on the manufacturer and the cost of the bed. Choose a filler based on your preferences:

  • polyurethane foam (PPU) - modern and affordable for the price. Lightweight, well-kept, wear-resistant, resilient. It is characterized by the fact that even with a constant emphasis on the head, it will be easy to take its initial state;
  • foam rubber - in comparison with previous generations also increased wear resistance. One of the cheapest options;
  • synthetic winterizer - not too voluminous, cheap. The synthetic winterizer wears out quickly, the fibers lose their elasticity;
  • holofiber is a modern hypoallergenic filler with affordable prices. If the headboard is suspended in the form of pillows, this is the best option;
  • latex is a natural and environmentally friendly material with hypoallergenic properties. Excellent shape retention, wear resistant.

In modern production, in the manufacture of solid beds, molded polyurethane foam is often used. The bottom line is that the filler is molded under the headboard blank, which makes this option clearly adapted to the dimensions of the frame. Replacing such a molded part will be problematic, and self-repair is not recommended.

For those who like to make and repair with their own hands, it is often recommended to use batting, synthetic winterizer and foam rubber. These materials are cheap, but their shelf life is significantly shorter than that of more modern solutions. In addition, if the filler is of poor quality, it can become a breeding ground for dust mites and retain excess moisture.

Design Tricks

The high head of the bed is regarded by designers as a great opportunity to give the interior a personality. They use a non-standard shape, bright upholstery, decorative trim and even mount built-in lighting elements. A bed with a high headboard may represent a structure that reaches the ceiling in height. At the same time, soft elements will create a single composition with the overall interior design and set the dynamics.

One of the most common solutions is a backlit bed at the head. This can be an LED strip that creates a soaring halo, spots or fixtures with moving heads that can be used for directional lighting.

If you need to combine a decorative and functional surface in a small room, then the headboard for a bed with shelves will be an excellent solution. This option is suitable for both a child’s room and an adult’s or couple’s bedroom.

When choosing a design option, it is worth remembering that such products often require a quality approach to the arrangement of the interior as a whole. Otherwise, the original bed with the headboard will look alien without the support of other elements of the interior. Choosing a berth with a designer soft headboard, you will make it the central element of the room, which will set the tone for the rest of the interior.

Where can I position

Beds with a soft headboard are often located in niches, alcoves. In this case, the back becomes a high soundproofing shield, preventing the passage of waves from both the bedroom and the outside. Art Nouveau headboards can play the role of a screen if the bed is near the window or in the corner of the room. Such a screen or shield will create a safe and comfortable corner, protect sleeping from a draft, prying eyes and bright sunlight if the room is on the east or southeast side.

If the location of the room allows you to set the bed exclusively next to the door, which is not very good, then choose an English-style headboard with "ears" covering the bed from the sides. When installed in a corner or near a window, arc-shaped constructions are suitable that smooth lines and beautifully limit the space of a berth. In this case, the head can be wider than the bed, creating a massive and reliable screen.

Existing headboard dimensions

If you choose a bed with a soft headboard, which becomes part of the frame, then here its dimensions will correspond to the width of the product. An attached, which, in fact, a separate furniture unit can be wider than the body of the bed, to a large extent surpass it. The width can overlap the window, opposite which a berth is installed or can be made according to the width of the alcove. Most often, the width can reach 100, 130, 150, 170, 190, 210 cm, which directly depends on the width of the bed. Headboards with a width of 220 cm are very rare and are most often made to order.

Height also varies: from a small standard headboard to a wall-to-ceiling structure. Maximum wall closure is relevant if there is a constant source of noise behind the wall or the room owner wants to protect neighbors from extraneous sounds. The average height of the soft headboard is usually within 1.5 meters. This is enough to provide high comfort for relaxation and create an attractive interior.
